The "dovecote" or "round house" in our grounds at Coombe Lodge The first snow this winter (Sunday 4 November) Coombe Lodge We moved during August 2012 to a barn conversion on the Compton Park estate. We are off the A30 dual carriageway between Sherborne and Yeovil, about three or four miles from Sherborne. Directions by car follow: 1) on A30 dual carriageway, coming from Sherborne towards Yeovil (Westbound): Do NOT take the first right-hand turn (signposted "Nether Compton"). Carry on the A30 another couple of miles or so. As you pass the "Fortune Palace" Chinese restaurant (and car sales business adjoining it) on your RIGHT, slow a bit as your right-hand turning is approaching. Do a HAIRPIN TURN across the dual carriageway where the "Over Compton & Trent" sign is - but do NOT go down that exit road - simply turn back onto the opposite side of the dual carriageway there to head back towards "Sherborne/Salisbury", doubling back on the dual carriageway (A30) in the opposite direction to the one you were just following. (NB: if the opposite carriageway is busy, there is room to cross, turn and wait on the opposite side in the OverCompton/Trent turning, before joining the Yeovil to "Sherborne/Salisbury" carriageway.) You will very shortly pass the Chinese Restaurant (Fortune Palace) and car sales business on your left. Immediately after passing it, turn LEFT off the dual carriageway (signs towards "Trenchermans" and "Compton House Cricket Club"), and drive down the lane. Warning: mind the potholes! At a fork, do NOT go straight on towards Worldwide Butterflies - take the RIGHT fork (again signposted "Trenchermans"). Further down the hill, as you drive over a speed hump and see a low wall on your left, turn sharp left. You will see a round, turreted "dovecote" - you are here! We are through the wooden gates, first on the left immediately after our dovecote (see picture, left). (If the gates are closed, we have three parking places opposite the gates.) OR: 2) on A30 dual carriageway, coming from Yeovil towards Sherborne (Eastbound): You will see an exit (left) to "Over Compton & Trent" - DON'T take it, but slow down - you turn off soon. You will then pass a Chinese Restaurant (Fortune Palace) and car sales business on the left. Immediately after passing it, turn LEFT off the dual carriageway (signs towards "Trenchermans" and "Compton House Cricket Club"), and drive down the lane. Warning: mind the potholes!
